What is Blood Pressure?
Everyone has blood pressure. As blood is pumped through your body's arteries, it creates force against the inside walls of your blood vessels. The amount of blood the heart pumps and the resistance of the arteries determines your blood pressure.
The standard way to show blood pressure is in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). This unit of measurement refers to how high the pressure inside your arteries is able to raise a column of mercury.
Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers: a top number and bottom number.
The top number measures blood pressure when the heart is pumping. It's known as systolic blood pressure.
The bottom number measures blood pressure when the heart is resting. It's known as diastolic blood pressure.
Blood pressure varies with the time of day as well as with the activity, so it should be checked several times to determine your average blood pressure.
